Chelsea Jewell, Property Manager and Senior Administrative Specialist, Gibbons-White, Inc.
Hometown: Nederland, CO
Why is your job awesome? My job is awesome because it’s 100% “me.” My position has evolved over the past 5.5 years into a dynamic fusion of things that challenge and interest me. Every day I get to learn something new about facilities management, accounting, law, etc. and do it all while in close communication with the building owners & occupants that make my job so rewarding. I also get to balance the sometimes-hectic property management side with admin and marketing. I love working at a small company where I always feel supported by a strong team and in tune with all facets of what we do!
Hobbies: I love to read, visit the Saturday farmer’s market in Boulder with my husband and daughter, play board games with friends, and spend time with family hiking, shopping, or doing just about anything. I’m lucky to live within an hour of two of all my immediate family and then some, so I take advantage of it often!
Favorite beer? Anything that combines my love for beer with my affinity for coffee & chocolate. Ex. Copper Kettle’s Mexican Chocolate Stout, Tweak from Avery, Boulder Beer Shake Chocolate Porter, Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout from Epic Brewing (or for an 8% kind of day, Son of a Baptist).
What's the first song on your pump up playlist? I actually looked this up on my “How to Convince an Introvert to Go Out” playlist: “But It’s Alright” by J.J. Jackson.
You have a time machine that'll take you to any year, present or future. Where do you go? Is my time machine broken!? I want to go to the PAST, but at my current age/wisdom…I’d go back to 2000 when my great-great grandma was 103 and ask her all about our family history, what it was like to emigrate to the US from Scotland, and her experience living in three different centuries.
Favorite happy hour spot in Boulder: Southern Sun – for me, it’s happy hour at any hour if I’m at Southern Sun.
One place in Colorado everyone should visit: Twin Lakes, CO. There’s pretty much nothing there and I didn’t even know it existed until a “fall colors” solo road trip a couple years ago. It’s a beautiful, peaceful area and gorgeous any time of year.
Favorite movie: La vita è bella (Life Is Beautiful). This film had such a profound impact on me as a kid that I remembered it clearly and rediscovered it, to my great joy, 20 years later.
What is the best gift you have ever received? A positive attitude. Seriously – my parents did a great job raising me and some of this is probably genetic, but it feels like mostly luck that I’m able to see the silver lining of any situation and keep moving forward. I’ve never been more grateful for anything, since this is the “gift” that has led to all my great experiences in education, career, relationships, etc.
If you were 80 years old, what advice would you give your children? Hopefully by the time I’m 80, my daughters will already know most of what I have to teach them and will have forgiven me for naming them after beer and Harry Potter. Nevertheless, I expect to be really wrinkly and wise by then, and can only imagine I’ll still be telling them to always take responsibility for their own happiness.
If there was a movie made about your life, who would play you and why? Sarah Jessica Parker. She’s literally twice my age, but we have matching noses. Plus we were both born in Ohio.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in life? Things happen. Circumstances change. Life is in flux. No matter how much you want to have control, in the grand scheme of things you’ll always have very little. But you CAN control your attitude and your actions - and the disorder of everything else will be far easier to handle if you think and act positively every chance you get.
That’s beautiful Chels and so absolutely you. I am always so proud and thankful for you. Ilove you always, Gran
