Help Colorado Receive its Funding and Representation: Fill Out Your Census!
To ensure Colorado has a louder voice at the national level and receives our share of federal funding, please complete your census survey and encourage your friends, colleagues and neighbors to do the same. The census will be available in multiple languages. You can respond via the internet, by phone, mail or in person in about ten minutes.
Why is it important to complete the census survey?
- The census determines the number of seats each state has in the House of Representatives (and it is likely that Colorado will add a seat or two if our population is accurately counted).
- The census also determines how we will draw new boundaries for our federal and state legislative districts.
- The census also dictates the annual distribution of $13 billion in federal funds for Colorado ($2,300 per person, per year).
It is important to note, given initial controversy in this area, that no citizenship information will be asked on the 2020 census. Further, all census data is protected by law and records are kept confidential for 72 years. All Census Bureau employees swear a lifetime oath to protect respondent information. Finally, personal information is never shared with other government agencies - it’s only released in summary tables (i.e., no individual records are released).
