We sit down with young professionals making a difference in the community. Though the COVID-19 crisis has changed how restaurants like West End Tavern are doing business, they are still working to provide their fan-favorite options to the community. This month, we sat down with Jeff Whitney, Head Chef at West End Tavern, to learn why he loves his job.
Why is your job so awesome?
The West End Tavern is a historic restaurant and building in downtown Boulder. I love being a part of that on-going history. It is a part of Big Red F, which is THE best restaurant group to work for in Colorado. I love serving great food and drink to anyone and everyone that walks in our doors.
What drives you to be a part of the Boulder community?
After moving here from South Florida, I found this place to be home. I love being a part of our community and contributing what I can. Not to mention, continuing to feed Boulder the finest BBQ around.
Who is your mentor and why?
Currently, Dave Query and Kyle Mendenhall. Both are my bosses, but they are teaching me a lot about the restaurant business. Fairness, consistency, passion, motivation and creativity in what you do. All of these things are very important to me right now.
What advice would you give your 18 year self?
The sense of hindsight is 20-20 is kind of funny because I have a whole list of things to advise my 18 year old self on. Save money, go on adventures, pay your bills and don’t forget to take the best care of yourself.

If you were 80 years old, what advice would you give your children?
The time same stuff I’d tell my 18 year old self but to also try all things. Try everything you can to see what you like and don’t like - and then try them again.
What is the most important life lesson you have learned?
Take care of yourself or no one else will.
